Acrylic on masonite board
49 × 122 centimetres
Details of work:
Many people I've talked to either didn't know what "that purple pillar thing" was, or thought it was something akin to a vase, so I'm going to say now that it is a lava lamp. This was the first time I've painted on masonite, and although I liked the finished product, I didn't enjoy painting much of it. Although I painted a large "X" on the back to keep the board from warping, it warped heavily anyway. I didn't prime the board first, either, so when I tried to use masking tape to make straight edges, it peeled up what I already painted. I like the wood paneling at the bottom, which was fairly easy to do. However, in this painting I followed my usual habits of painting the foreground first, background last, which really dragged out the process of painting this. I was aiming for a really interesting image, with a feeling of awe or wonder, and illogical lighting. However, I couldn't get the bright "grape" shade of purple I wanted, so the image is really dim and dingy. I'm also disappointed because I had to take two pictures to fit the painting into an image, and because of the glare and the rather shoddy job stitching them together, the version you see here is nowhere near what I'd like viewers to see.
