Watercolour on paper
31 × 25 centimetres
Detail of work:
I'm not at all happy with the way this one turned out. It was very problematic. I was attempting to use watercolours to create a clean, relaxed, "special place" kind of scene, but it ended up looking too childishly fairy-tale-ish, and wishy-washy. I found that trying to get the proper value by mixing more or less water was VERY difficult, and also found trying to leave white areas white (an essential skill when of using watercolours) to be equally challenging. This is because I'm used to being able to paint over things when using acrylics. I like the way the waterlilies and cat-tails turned out, and they were fairly easy to do. The willow trees were more annoying. I like the relaxed, flowing way the one on the right (it was painted second of the two) turned out, but I think the one on the left looks too rigid and out of place. To make the one on the right, I painted various greens and yellows into water on the paper to make it look splotchy and sunlit, then painted faded blurry leaves on it while the first layer was still damp. I waited for that to dry before painting on the last, most clear leaves.
